each sister paid 9 bucks....there are 4 sisters....so thats (4 * 9) = 36 bucks.

they received a 10% discount....so they paid 90%

90% of the total gift is $ 36...
0.90x = 36
x = 36/0.90
x = 40 <=== ur answer
