In this short story, we can see how Maggie has low self-esteem. She was injured in a house fire that left her scars all over her body, and she is self-conscious about these burns in her body. Unlike her sister Dee, she doesn't wear revealing clothes or attract men. She is introverted and timid, while Dee is very loud and garish. Maggie is not a confident girl. We can see these aspects of her personality when Dee walks in, as she leaves or hangs in the background in the shadows. She is so shy that she even can't bring herself to make eye contact.
