Body mass index (BMI) is used to estimate the body’s total amount of fat and as a screening tool to identify potential weight problems in individual. Body builders, some high-performance athletes and pregnant women are the mitigating factors that should be considered before a person is advised to achieve lower BMI.

The other factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, and muscle mass can influence the relationship between BMI and body fat. Therefore, BMI is calculated the same way for adults and children, but interpreted differently using standard weight status categories.
