There is a lot of atmosphere above us and the weight is particularly heavy if we're at a low level, as in a valley. That indicates that the air pressure is higher at lower elevations and lower at higher elevations.

The atmosphere's water vapour may also alter atmospheric pressure. Huge amounts of water vapour in extremely humid air make it less dense and lighter than dry air. This is due to the fact that oxygen and nitrogen, the most prevalent gases in our atmosphere, are heavier than water molecules. Therefore, extremely dry air can result in high atmospheric pressure and very wet air can result in low atmospheric pressure.

A thick air mass that is often colder and drier than the surrounding air is known as a high pressure system. Less dense air masses that are often moister and warmer than the surrounding air make up low pressure systems.

Typically, regions with high atmospheric pressure also have good weather. Clouds and storms can arise as a result of low pressure systems. Normally, air moves from high-pressure zones to low-pressure zones.
