The fear that the Americans had about acquiring new territories in the Mexican Cession was that

  • New slave states would help the South gain power in Congress.

The Americans that lived in the Northern part of the country feared that the Southern part of the country would have more power by the acquisition of the territory.

As at the end of the Mexican American war, the United states had gained a significant part of Mexico.

Some of the areas include:

  • California
  • Nevada
  • Utah
  • New Mexico

The northern states were free states that disagreed with the ideals of slavery. The states in the south agreed with it.
