add 8 to both sides:

7 x - 8 + 8 = 3 x + 8

7x  = 3 x + 8

subtract  3x from both sides:

7 x - 3 x = 3 x + 8 - 3x

4x =  8

Divide both sides by 4 :

4x / 4  = 8 / 4

x = 2
