The phenomenon is dosage compensation. Since sex chromosomes
across sexes in species differ by number and type, nature has acquired a way of
equalizing expression of these genes in
both sexes. In humans, one X chromosome
in the females is completely silenced/inactivated while the other is fully
transcribed.
