Mahmud de was a ruler of the Gaznavid Empire from 997 until his death in 1030, being the first to take the title of Sultan. His conquests in India made him famous in the face of posterity, and those that should have greater historical consequences. The conquest was not easy, having to undertake one campaign after another, but it was favored by the division of the Indian states, and by the attraction of the fabulous temple loot. From 1001 to 1026 he led seventeen invasions against India, with no intention of converting Islam to anyone, but limiting himself to ruining temples, like that of Somnath in 1026, managing to extend his empire from Afghanistan to most of Iran, as well as to Pakistan and the northwest of India.
