The advent of phenothiazines was seen as instrumental in reducing the population of mental hospitals.
Phenothiazines is a class of antipsychotics that functions to modify functions of different receptors namely:
(1) Dopaminergic receptors - general antipsychotic property
(2) Serotonergic receptors - anxiolytic and antidepressant property
(3) Histaminergic receptors - sedative property
Some examples from this drug class is Chlorpromazine and Propericiazine. The use of these antipsychotic agent will eventually reduce the number of admitted patients in mental hospitals.
