Filmmakers most likely chose this name because it was about the Selma to Montgomery marches that Dr. King participated in. The name is Selma and not Dr. King because it is a story told over a three month period where Dr. King and many others planned the Selma marches.

What is Selma March?

Selma is a historical  movie released in 2014 about Martin Luther King Jr march from Selma to Montgomery. Filmmaker have chosen  Selma because it is about of the famous "Bloody Sunday" march on March 7, 1965, in Selma by Dr king and its followers.

This march is remembered in history because while in their march they faced violence there from the administrative people. And led to the congress passing the voting right act in 1965 that ensured that now the African American got right to vote.

Therefore, as this movie is all about march to Selma to get the African American  equal voting rights, so it is named Selma instead of Dr King.
