Variety can be describes as contrast and diversity. It is the counterpoint of unity. Juxtaposing various or contradictory elements in a composition adds interest, spontaneity, and the element of surprise. To contrast this, Unity is a feeling of total cohesiveness. It gathers all the parts of something to create a whole that is of a harmonious nature.
