With Sentence 3, you would also expect to be told the situation, but are not. Sentence 1 is important because it provides us with an example of him hating peaches (which makes Sentence 3 less needed). Sentence 2 shows us the extent of Matt's hate for peaches. Finally, Sentence 4 makes a nice closing about Matt's future with peaches.
