The Union soldiers were the northern army of the united states during the Civil War, they helped stop and end slavery. While the confederate was the southern army of the United States and did not want to end slavery.
In 1860, the Southern States seceded from the US because of the issue of slavery. The Southern States came to be known as the Confederacy. The Northern States came to be known as the Union. In 1861, war broke out between the two sides. The South was fighting to keep slavery while the North was fighting to end slavery. The Civil War ended in 1865 with the victory of the Union. The Southern States where readmitted to the Union and slavery was abolished.
