Repression, rationalization, and projection are examples of ego defense mechanisms or Unconscious Defense Mechanisms. These are the ways we treat ourselves when we are emotionally hurt. These are the ways we cope up when we face sudden shock or when we encounter tremendous amount of stress. When we are anxious and we can’t totally handle that emotion or we lost a person who are close to us, we then treat ourselves just like how we act when we are injured physically. When we experience a very painful event, repression happens. This is when we totally forget or we have complete memory loss of a painful event. Repression happens when our subconscious mind doesn’t want us to remember what happened because it may negatively affect our mood. On the other hand, when you throw the blame to another person with all the unwanted events happening in your life, that is what you call projection. Take for instance, when you fail the test, you tend to blame your teacher. And lastly, rationalization is the act of rationalizing or creating a self serving explanation for what you did. Example of this is is when one says he or she has the right to cheat because the all the lessons weren’t explained by the teacher.
