Source Collection
The purpose of this assignment is to help you:
identify credible and relevant research,
critically read and evaluate the research as it relates to your topic, and
record and organize information from the research for future use.
Once you find articles that seem interesting, record information about each in the sections on this attached worksheet Download this attached worksheet and save the article for future reference. You will also use this information for your Weekly Video recording this week.
Here is an example:
EXAMPLE ARTICLE
APA citation for the article:
Johnson, D.I. (2007). Using out-of-class quizzes to promote cognitive engagement. Communication Teacher, 21(2), 35-38.
Purpose/Goal of the article: They want to create student engagement using Bloom’s Taxonomy to promote reading for course assignments.
Knowledge- define or describe key concepts from this article
The main idea of this article is that traditional quizzing feels like busy work for students. Johnson opts to try a format based on Bloom’s Taxonomy to help give more meaning to the quizzes.
Application- apply concepts to specific main and subpoints in your outline.
Students being bored/doing busy work could work really well with my first point which focuses on how our educational system is and has been, broken. I don’t know if it is enough to hold a whole sub-point, but I could pair it with other research to add more impact.
Synthesis- relate a concept to other articles you are using.
I have found another sourceLinks to an external site. on indigenous ways of thinking, comparing it to Western ways, and identifying ways they are connected. Using indigenous methods might be a better way to approach it since education works best when we acknowledge the interdependence all our world has.
Analysis- compare and contrast two ideas within the research
Johnson says that the format will help link overarching concepts in the course. This could be from the synthesis question because you are forced to relate two things together that might not seem to go together. However, it could also be from the analysis too because you have to look at two concepts from multiple angles to understand them.
Evaluation- Identify a long quote (3+ sentences) you could use for the outline and paraphrase it in one sentence. Which do you think will be more impactful for the audience?
“However, based on instructor analysis of quizzes submitted across three semesters, only about 5% of students have significant difficulty understanding differences among Bloom’s taxonomy question types. The most common difficulties are not understanding comparison and contrast (students tend to discuss the pros and cons of a single concept instead) for analysis questions and simply explaining a quotation instead of agreeing or disagreeing with it for evaluation questions. Focusing student attention on these common difficulties before the first few quizzes seems to be helpful in lessening the frequency of these errors.”
Teachers need to adjust for the fact that while students mostly understood the quiz format, overall they seemed to struggle with the details.
My sentence is much easier to use in a speech, but I think this is information that might be better used with other research, and not separate.
Key findings, conclusions, or interesting information: Very short article, everything is covered in the information above.
