Use inverse operations. 11 minus 3 is 8. 8 divided by 2 is 4. 4 minus 1 is 3.
(NOT SURE) x COULD equal 3, but the lines, as far as I know. relate to absolute value. So it could be |-3 + 1| and that would equal 4.
and if you put a variable next to a number, you multiply. so you multiply 2 by 3 plus 1, or 2 times 4, which equals 8. 8 plus 3 equals 11.
