In an experimental investigation, the group that is not manipulated by the researcher and is then compared to the experimental group is called the control.
There are 2 main type of groups in experimental investigations:
- The experimental group are exposed to the cause variable, also known as the independent variable and then assessed for effects, the dependent variable.
- The control group are subjected to the same conditions as the experimental group except the independent variable and also measured for dependent variable. In other words, they serve as the basis for finding the effects that the independent variable might have on the experimental group.
In summary, the group that is not manipulated by researcher during experimental investigations and then compared to the experimental group is known as the control group.
