To compare fractions with different denominators, you simply make both of them have the same denominator.

Pretend like you are going to add the fractions together.

To add them, they must have the same denominator.

For example :

1/2 + 3/4

You must multiply 1/2 by 2/2 because 2 goes into 4 2 times. So, in order to get 4 as both denominators, you must see how many times both denominators go into that denominator :)

1/2 × 2/2 = 2/4

So, 2/4 is the new fraction.

Although it looks different from 1/2, the are equal with one another :)

After both of the fractions have the same denominator, you look at the numerator (top number) and see which one is larger :)
