Which statement describes a similarity between Pieter Brueghel's painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus and Ovid's "The Story of Daedalus and Icarus"?A. Both include a reference to Daedalus.B. Both describe Icarus drowning within sight of shore.C. Both portray a farmer, a fisherman, and a shepherd.D. Both show witnesses attempting to rescue Icarus.

Respuesta :

The correct answer is C. From Brueghel's painting (in the attached picture below) we can observe the central figures - fisherman, angler and ploughman.  The artwork is the reference to the following lines of Ovid's work:

Far off, far down, some fisherman is watching

As the rod dips and trembles over the water,

Some shepherd rests his weight upon his crook,

Some ploughman on the handles of his ploughshare,

It is the description of Icarus's fly over these central figures - busy with their work. Interestingly, in comparison with its original copy the painting doesn't include the flying of Icarus. However, we can observe the similarities of the figures.
