Food labels provide consumers with the knowledge about what nutrients are contained or included in the product that they are selling. It also is a necessary protocol for all businesses to determine that their products are safe for consumption. The categories that food labels use are:

a. Serving Size - the amount of serving that contains such amount of nutrients.

b. Calories (and calories from fat) - the amount of energy that the food can provide.

c. Nutrients - the types of nutrients (i.e. Vitamin A - K) that can be found in the amount of serving of the food.  

d. Percent Daily Value - the amount of recommended energy intake from food which is set at 2,000 - 2,500 calories per day.
