Shortly after Lincoln's presidential election in 1860, the southern states secede from the Union and declared Jefferson Davis as their president because they disagree with Lincoln's political ideas and plans to abolish slavery. However, the Confederates occupied Fort Sumter, located in South Carolina and began the Civil War. At this time Lincoln did not want to send more troops because of the possible secession of Virginia and other loyal states. However, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee secede as well and joined to the Confederated States that stood up against Lincoln.
