Part of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) provided unskilled, manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands.
Almost all CCC initiatives were put to rest until they directly aided in the war effort when the United States entered it in December 1941. On June 30, 1942, the Civilian Conservation Corps was officially ended by Congress after a speedy reappropriation of the program's money.
The CCC, one of Roosevelt's New Deal initiatives that many believe was most effective, planted more than three billion trees and built pathways and shelters in more than 800 parks around the country during its nine-year existence. The present state and national park systems that we enjoy today were shaped in part by the CCC.
