Hygroscopic compounds which are also known as water loving compounds, which are able to attract or hold the water from the environment, either through absorption or adsorption. Many react chemically with water such as metal hydrides or alkali metals.
One of the main application of these compounds was in absorption cycles that were used in the refrigerators.
In glycerol the presence of 3OH groups in it make is more hygroscopic in nature and therefore when we use glycerol's in the lotions, it helps retain the water in it because it now attracts water and hence keeps the skin moist.
