Actually, out of the more than 7,000 cases that are submitted to the Court for review each year, 100 to 150 are accepted. Usually, the Court handles appeals of decisions made by the highest court in a state or the relevant U.S. Court of Appeals (if the state court decided a Constitutional issue).
The justices meet in private conference to make decisions on Wednesdays and Fridays. The court will hear the case if four out of the nine justices vote in favor of hearing it. Only the justices know the reasons behind their decisions.
