Britain needed money to pay for itself from the French and Indian war. The king thought he had the right to tax the colonists because they were still a part of Britain, even though they were across the ocean. They put many different taxes on the colonists in order to try and gain all of the money they needed to pay for the war.
The British people were already heavily taxes, and in the mind of King George, he thought that the colonists were still under the rule of the Crown, and because he decided that they didnt pay as much as the British people, he is able to raise their taxes.
