Sherlock Holmes is a fiction character created by Arthur Conan Doyle. When Holmes refers to the law as based on experience, he is referencing a branch of a legal theory called jurisprudence. This branch of the theory, as analyzed by philosopher, Gilles Deleuze, states that laws are stipulated not only based on logic but, often, based on experience and particular cases that set precedents on which laws can be written. The law then becomes a matter of experimentation, judgement and practical thought, the basic components of experience.
