It is well known that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is effective in treating emotional disorders. Despite its clinical usefulness, there is no widely recognized hypothesis explaining how it works. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that ECT significantly reduces brain metabolic activity and has anticonvulsant characteristics.

According to the anticonvulsant theory, ECT works by enhancing the brain's natural anticonvulsant capabilities. Prior research into the pathogenesis and therapy of depression has yielded conflicting results about the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid ("GABA+," GABA and coedited macromolecules). Our study's objective was to examine GABA+ alterations that were responsive to treatment in patients who were getting electroconvulsive therapy for a depressive episode (ECT).
