Respuesta :

The parents of a school-aged child with recently diagnosed leukemia ask the nurse why they were told that their child has too many white blood cells. The nurse should respond by telling them that the bone marrow is not controlling their child's white blood cell production as it should.

Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells (WBCs) or leukocytes that help fight infections. During leukemia, the bone marrow ( soft, spongy substance present within the bones) produces numerous white blood cells that are abnormal.

These abnormal WBCs swarm the bone marrow and enter the bloodstream. Since these abnormal white blood cells are different from the healthy ones, they fail to shield the body from infections.
