The founding of the American GI Forum in 1948 and subsequent efforts by Mexican Americans to challenge their segregation in public schools demonstrated the the growing mobilization of Mexican Americans in the Southwest.
Dr. Hector P. Garcia founded the American GI Forum (AGIF) on March 26, 1948, in Corpus Christi, the county capital of Nueces County, Texas, to address the issues of Mexican-American veterans, who were separated from other veterans organisations. The AGIF was initially established to advocate for the civil rights of World War II veterans of Mexican heritage who had been refused medical care by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. The AGIF quickly expanded into non-problems veteran's like voting rights, jury duty, and educational desegregation. The group claimed 25,000 members in 18 states in 1959. The AGIF now represents all veterans of Hispanic descent.
