Messenger RNA (mRNA) is produced by the transcription of the DNA molecule. The processing of mRNA includes capping that attaches modified guanosine to its 5' end.

What is capping?

Capping is the approach to the mRNA processing that occurs before transcription is completed. It occurs at the 5' end of the mRNA and adds a modified guanosine nucleoside that is linked through triphosphate linkage.

The guanosine added is modified by the methylation of the nitrogen atom of the base and the mRNA is modified by the methylation of the ribose sugar. The capping of mRNA is done to protect the mRNA from exonuclease degradation.

Therefore, mRNA gets modified by the process of capping.
