The statement used the word 'average' in relation to the whole globe. This means that some parts of the earth will experience more warming than others.

Averages and variations

An average is obtained by summing up all the variates in a data set and dividing it by the total number of variates. Thus, a single figure is used to represent the entire data set.

The problem here is that the variations within the data set are hidden with averages.

Using average to represent an increase in the temperature of the earth as a result of increased concentration of greenhouse gases can be dangerous. This is because some parts of the world will experience far larger temperature changes while others will experience lower than the average.
