On January 7, 1891, in Notasulga, Alabama, Zora Neale
Hurston was born. The fifth of eight children, Hurston would
become one of the country's most prolific and celebrated
writers. She published her first short story, "John Redding
Goes to Sea," in the Howard University campus literary
society's magazine Stylus. Most people, however, know
Hurston as the author of the novel "There Eyes Were
Watching God," the powerful coming-of-age story of Janie,
an African-American teenager.
