The theme is that a creature’s worth depends more on its actions than on its status. The queen bee helps to get across to the theme by trying to kill the princesses for unabridged power, then gets thrown out of the hive because she wanted to be on the highest status. She also helps to get to the conflict because she tries to kill the princesses.
