Which of the following would be classified as hydrophobic? Glucose, sucrose,NaCl, long chain fatty acid, pepsin

Respuesta :

hydrophobic means they don't mix with water and that they are non polar. glucose and sucrose are both sugars and we know sugar disolves in water, NaCl is that same as salt which dissolves in water, fatty acid become more hydrophobic as their tails get lo get longer so a long tail would be hydrophobic, and I'm not sure about pepsin.
So long chain fatty acids, and maybe pepsin

Answer:

long chain fatty acid

Explanation:

A hydrophobic or non polar substance repels water while a hydrophilic or polar substance is attracted towards it. Glucose and sucrose are types of sugar molecules and sugar easily dissolves in water hence they are not hydrophobic. NaCl or salt is also soluble in water hence its not hydrophobic. Pepsin is an enzyme that helps in breakdown of protein and is not hydrophobic.

Fatty acid is composed of a carboxylic group and a hydrocarbon chain. The hydrocarbon chain makes it non polar so longer the chain, more non polar the fatty acid becomes making it more hydrophobic.
