Of 200 students surveyed about their extracurricular activities, some are members of the student council. Of those students on the student council, 85 students also play a sport, and the remaining 72 students do not play a sport. Write an equation to find the number of students who are not on student council.

200 - x = y ; when y is not student council and x is student council

or 200 - 157 = 43

I. The only clues we got here are total students is 200, student council and not student counsin.

  - 85 kids of student council play sport.

  - 72 kids of student council not play sport.

So the total of student counsin is

   = 85 + 72

 x  = 157

II. Find the kids who are not student council

When total student - student council = not student council

           200 - x = y

           200 - 157 = 43

So  y  = 43

That makes 43 kids of students who aren't student council.
