The Thirteen Colonies were the British colonies on the east coast of North America that revolted in 1775 and declared their independence as the United States of America on July 4, 1776.

British colonies in America gained ever-increasing influence over new and larger territories after the Peace of Paris of 1763. This treaty ended British involvement in the Seven Years' War.

During the time in which they remained under British rule, the colonies were providers of natural resources on a large scale for the metropolis, which in turn sold these manufactured products in a cartelized form. Thus, the colonies depended almost exclusively on Great Britain in economic terms, although politically and socially they had greater autonomy.
