Samurais served their Shogun. A shogun was the military leader and as the years went on shoguns became more in charge then the emperors.

Samurai in feudal Japan, were soldiers who provide service to a daimyo, who in turn, as a Lord, served the shogun. In doing so, the authority of the shogun is strengthened by the military prowess of the samurai.

Since the daimyos were landowners and vassals to the shogun, providing their military might and loyalty to the shogun, it then means that the samurai would serve the shogun by also protecting the lives of people and properties within feudal Japan.

It is also worthy to note that the daimyos were warrior elites and were regarded as the highest members of the samurai class.
