The similarities between the Winkel Tripel projection and the Mercator projection are as follows-
- Both of these projections produce cylindrical projection maps.
- In both of these maps, the line of equator and the Prime Meridian line are represented in the form of straight lines that are perpendicular to each other. The equator is the east-west line and the Prime Meridian is the north-south line.
The differences between the Winkel Tripel projection and the Mercator projection are as follows-
- In the Mercator projection maps, the higher latitudinal areas such as the poles are distorted, producing a larger area at the poles, whereas in the Winkel Tripel projection maps, the areas of the polar regions are shown without any distortion.
- The lines of latitude and longitude are all straight lines in Mercator projection maps, but the line of latitude and longitude gets curved as they travel away from the Equator as well as from the Prime Meridian.
