In a dystopian setting like "The Giver", every single person is indistinguishable from another, so much so that it practically abolishes discrimination. However, this type of setting puts massive strains on individuality and since jobs are picked for every person in "The Giver", no one can harness their true potential, in whatever field they're skilled in.
