One Russian prince, Ivan III, refused to pay the tribute to the Mongols. The Mongols were very weak in power at this time so Ivan III was able to gather more people on his side. Soon, many other principalities stopped paying the tribute and this was the final factor which led to the fall of the Mongol Empire in Eurasia.

Afterwards, Ivan III unified all Russian lands by the end of his reign and his strong military skills and leadership built a strong monarchy in the Russian Empire. From the time before the Mongol rule, Russia was heavily influenced by the Byzantine Empire; art and architecture, writing, literature, religion and government of the Byzantine Empire influenced Russia and was adopted by them as well.

Ivan III created a "Third Rome" after marrying a Byzantine princess, Sofia. Sofia introduced Byzantine court customs to Moscow and Ivan even used a Byzantine symbol for his emblem. The Mongol Empire had destroyed Moscow in their conquest for Russia, but together Ivana nd Sofia brought in talented architects and rebuilt Moscow into the "Third Rome."
