Item 3
Read the lines from "Lone Dog."

I'll never be a lap dog, licking dirty feet,
A sleek dog, a meek dog, cringing for my meat,
Not for me the fireside, the well-filled plate,
But shut door, and sharp stone, and cuff, and kick, and hate.

What is the effect of these lines on the tone of the poem?

A.The phrase "cuff, and kick, and hate" creates a resigned tone.

B.The word "cringing" creates a bewildered tone.

C.The phrase "a lap dog" creates a loving tone.

D.The line "Not for me the fireside, the well-filled plate," creates a sarcastic tone.

Answer:

Im not sure, it might be B. Or it actually might be C. im sorry if im wrong, put the answer in the comments

Explanation:

D. (My personal bias or opinion on this is D but i'm not 100% on this since I am taking the same test or question as you right now and haven't completed it.)

A couldn't be the answer because "resigned" means accepting an unpleasant fact or statement.

B is wrong because the word "cringe" does NOT create a bewildered tone.

C isn't correct because the passage is not a loving, sweet story, it is about a stone cold dog.

D could be the answer because the passage is sarcastic at times.
