The Magna Carta, also known as the Great Charter, was a charter of liberties to which England’s King John had to agree 1215 under the pressure of the powerful barons that threaten to create a rebellion against the King´s failing foreign policies and onerous taxes.

This document was revolutionary because it placed King John and all of England’s forthcoming kings within a rule of law. It would later be the basis for the English system of the common law, and a symbol of freedom against oppression.
