Formula: A = length x width

width = x

length = x + 10

144 = (x)(x + 10)

144 = x^2 + 10x

x^2 + 10x - 144 = 0

Using the quadratic equation, we come up with x = -18 and x = 8. Because dimensions, or measurements, are a scalar quantity, x = 8.

width = 8 in

length = 18 in
