So you need to isolate/get the variable "x" by itself:

1. 8² + x² = 9²     First square 8 and 9

2. 64 + x² = 81      Subtract 64 on both sides

3. x² = 17   Square root both sides to get "x" by itself

4. [tex]x = \sqrt{17}[/tex]

The 4th step is where the error occurs because when you square root "x²", you also have to square root on the other side of the equal sign, so you need to square root 17.
