Humans accumulate microplastics inside their bodies by drinking water and eating seafood.

What are microplastics?

They are small particles of plastic resulting from the breakdown of industrial waste or the breakdown of plastic items. They are extremely harmful pollutants and can cause various health and medical issues.

They are defined as small particles of plastics which are less than 5 mm in diameter. Microplastics are described in 2 categories.

Primary microplastics are the tiny particles of plastics which are designed as such. They are to be used in industries for the manufacture of clothing and textiles, cosmetics etc.

The particles of plastic resulting from the breakdown of large parts of plastic like a plastic container are called secondary microplastics.

Plastics are non-biodegradable, therefore they do not break down by them into small molecules. Plastic decomposition takes hundreds of years and while they are on earth, they cause extremely difficult problems.

Therefore, microplastics formed in the sea enter the human system by drinking water and eating seafood as the organisms might have consumed the plastic.
