A wooden board 100 centimeters long is cut into two pieces.One piece is 16 centimeters longer than the other. What are the lengths of the two pieces?

x+y=100

one is 16 more than other
x is 16 more than y
x=16+y

x=16+y therefor we can put 16+y for x
(16+y)+y=100
16+y+y=100
16+2y=100
minus 16 both sides
2y=84
divide by 2
y=42

sub back
x=16+y
x=16+42
x=58


the legnsh are
42 cm and 58cm
