The answer is escape from economic and political turmoil. There were a lot of reasons why people ventured to the New World but at the time, economic issues weren’t one of them except in trade. This came later when people wanted a better life which is why they left for the U.S.

Europeans were looking for new horizons, more opportunities, adventures and many other things. But economic difficulties wasn't one of them. In other words, one may say that they had a lot, but wanted more. Furthermore, at least in the 16th century, Europe was not suffering from any dramatic economic difficulties.
