Cranes uses vivid and realistic imagery in order for the reader to sense the danger the characters are facing.  The wounded man is meant to portray the anxiety the situation is causing the characters.

The effect that cause the wounding of the men with the shovel it's pretty intense. The author manages to use a much descriptive scenary and details that allows the reader to actually feel like it's there, like is being part of the stroy that is being told. It talks about war and death and the shovel is a well known instrument or tool that can bring the picture of death people. It is very dramatic the way the story is told, exactly as a war should be. While they are trying to burry their friend, they could listen to the sound of the bullets. Lean takes finally takes the shovel and burries his friend. The sound plop of the earth into the ground makes the reader picture the situation and creates a cold feeling.
