Therefore, the colonists viewed the proclamation as a scheme to cheat them of the lands which they regarded as a rightful inheritance. The colonists believed that the proclamation was being used to keep them penned between the Allegheny Mountains and the Atlantic coast, making it easier for Great Britain to keep them in line. The law was openly disobeyed as wagons loaded with colonists headed west to settle anyway.
