In 1792, after over 2 years of seeing his power political power gradually vanishing, King Louis XVI attempted to flee France along with his family: his wife Marie Antoinette and his son, Louis Joseph. As the royal family approached the French-Austrian border, a border patrol trooper identified Louis XVI and arrested the whole royal family, and then they were sent back to Paris. The next year, the Revolutionary Convention trialed and sentenced Louis XVI on charges of treason because of his failed attempt to escape and seek for help from an enemy foreign power, Austria. Therefore, Louis XVI was guillotined on January 21, 1793. His wife, Marie Antoinette would be executed in October, 1793, and his son, Louis XVII (Louis Joseph) would die from starvation and malnutrition caused by gross neglect of his jailers.
